The case of the Dying Brazilian

Two minute mysteries.
See if you know the answers!

By: Donald J. Sobol

It had been months since Nick the Nose had slipped into Inspector Winters' office to peddle a phony tip.

"I got something on the Nilo Bernardes case," the greasy little informer confided slyly.

"Nilo Bernardes," the inspector explained to Haledjian, "is a 10-year-old boy who was kidnapped last month in Santos, Brazil. His father, a millionaire, paid the ransom. The boy has not been returned."

"Last night," said Nick, "this old guy in Pedro's Flop started to talk as he lay dying. At first he ran on about how he had lived all his life in Brazil and never did anything wrong till last month. Then he got interesting."

"He said he had sinned by collecting the ransom money for young Nilo. Before he got paid his share, he had overheard the rest of the kidnap gang plotting to kill him.

"So that night he stowed away on a freighter and jumped ship in America. With his dying breath, he named the town in Brazil where the kidnappers were laying low.

"Of course, he spoke in Spanish and I didn't understand him. But Pedro, who is Mexican, understood and did the interpreting. Pedro will back me up.

"I figure," concluded Nick, "that the name of the town where the kidnappers are hiding is worth a bundle!"

The inspector rose, growling. Haledjian barely had time to open the office door before Nick went sailing out.

Why was Nick given the heave-ho?
