Dr. Haledjian was returning late at night from a hunting trip when the headlights of his car shone upon a sedan parked
across the country road.
He swerved onto the shoulder to avoid a collision and braked as two of his tires blew. Suddenly
four masked me appeared. They relieved him of his money and sped off in the seden.
"A neat little caper," muttered
the sleuth, playing his flashlight over the scattering razor-sharp studs that had caused the two flats.
Tramping to
a farmhouse, he told the farmer who answered his knocking, "I was just robbed about a mile down the road. I'll need a new
tire. Can you get someone to help me?"
"Come in," the farmer invited. "I'll telephone Titusburg. Make yourself comfortable."
The
farmer disappeared into the kitchen. Haledjian heard him speak over the telephone to the sheriff and then to a service station.
"The
sheriff and a new tire are on the way here," the farmer said, emerging from the kitchen.
An hour later the sleuth was
recounting the details of the holdup to the sheriff while a serviceman put on his spare tire and the new tire which the farmer
had requested.
Then, upon Haledjian's recommendation, the sheriff arrested the farmer for being involved in the holdup.
